The region’s only canine relay hurdling team is on the trail of more playful pooches to help it make an impact on the national scene.
The recently-formed Tyne Tailwaggers flyball team has been training each Thursday at the Linskill Centre in North Shields and hopes to enter two teams for a national Flyballing competition in March.
Flyballing involves teams of dogs competing against each other, each dog racing in relay over hurdles to collect a ball and return to base. It also requires owner dedication and patience and has been popularised in recent years with its inclusion as an event at Crufts.
Team organiser, Hazell Brown, says any type of dog is welcome.
“People think of it as something for Collies, but it isn ’t. The size and shape of your dog aren’t important. We’ve even got a Yorkie in our team. ’
“We are looking for dogs that are willing to play and for people wanting to be with their dog and learn with them”.
